Stories Have Helped Me Learn, and Now Stories Will Help Me Teach.
Sharing concepts and content in the huge world of energy systems and policy: recognizing we have too little time and too much to do, and yet our minds crave depth, discussion, and delight.
Context Matters, and so does Content.
It hit me that every time I read anything scholarly or technical in the vast fields of energy systems and policy that I love, I want to drop everything and tell people about it. I'm a bit of an intellectual gramophone, a cassette player: I embrace interesting andecdotes and facts delivered through captivating mediums, then spool them out in metaphorical parlance. My aim? To engage readers and listeners in dynamic, spirited modes of learning and thinking which resonate with them better than the flat efforts at communication we see in quick-hit media and rushed posts and blogs.
What To Expect
I'm often overwhelmed by the dissonance in media reporting on energy systems and policy topics. Popular news frequently lacks context, almost always lacks historical perspective, and sometimes is just factually incorrect. In my efforts to counteract this anathema of circumstances, I find myself teaching, lecturing, hosting workshops, and writing for various career-oriented websites. I want people to feel comfortable asking questions, enjoy learning and enjoy the thinking that comes with it.
Much of what I do in the real world will appear here. This includes content I discuss with student energy clubs, legislative and agency staffers seeking to learn substantive concepts, fellow seasoned professionals at industry events, and even some winding thoughts that sprout from deeper one-on-one interactions with other curious cats in my field.
Don't be surprised if politics, history, behavioral economics, macroeconomics, statistics, physics, humor, and charivari all make an appearance. Energy as a concept is as vast in breadth as it is in depth, and understanding it benefits from being viewed through various lenses and disciplines.
And I end with a picture I took, of a sunset in Colonia, Uruguay. The beginnings of this effort came to me here, in a moment of calm where suddenly I decided that many colorful things and thoughts I create must be as accessible as the night sky.
